Host Europe Group Selects Workspace Technology for Multi-Million Pound Data Centre Refurbishment

January 2013: Host Europe Group, the largest privately owned hosting group and virtualisation provider in Europe, today announces a complete refit of its Leeds data centre that will make the facility one of the most energy efficient and resilient in the country.

The data centre refit is being undertaken in partnership with Workspace Technology, a specialist data centre design, build and management company. Workspace Technology will implement a new redundant modular design, featuring energy economiser cooling systems that will achieve free cooling for more than 98 per cent of the year.

The multi-million £ project will see Host Europe Group’s existing infrastructure completely transformed with a new Tier 3 plus modular design that will bring Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to at most 1.2, and potentially as low as 1.15.

“Historically, Tier 3 and Tier 4 data centres have had to sacrifice energy efficiency to ensure high performance and reliability,” said Host Europe Group’s CEO Thomas Vollrath. “However, new technologies and design techniques such as modularisation and economisers, along with better understanding of IT equipment tolerances, are now enabling facilities to lower their PUE drastically without compromising reliability.

“Lowering our energy consumption and PUE is not just about saving the planet though. Cutting our power requirements will also enable us to make serious financial gains over the life of the data centre, which means we can maintain costs for our customers.”

The first stage of the refit will see the implementation of two of four self-contained 1 megavolt ampere (MVA) modules, consisting of an individual 1MVA transformer, backup generator systems, switchgear, chiller plant and 600kVA uninterruptable power supply (UPS) system. The system is designed to be “concurrently maintainable”, meaning that the failure of any individual module will not affect the operation of the data centre.

Roy Griffiths, Workspace Technology’s Sales and Technical Manager, said: “As a specialist data centre design, build and management company, we can deliver projects that are specifically designed to the specific needs of individual operators, without the extra costs associated with traditional consultancy practices. With more than a million customers, Host Europe Group is one of Europe’s major players in the hosting industry, and this is a major endorsement of our capabilities and our ability to compete with established, multinational engineering firms.”
